[UNDERSTANDING REPORTS]

One value is out of range. What now?

Reference ranges are statistical, not verdicts. Here is how clinicians actually use them.

A reference range describes where most results from a healthy reference population fall. By definition, some healthy people sit outside it. A value slightly beyond the boundary is a prompt for context, not a diagnosis.

Context a clinician adds

  • 01Your symptoms and examination findings
  • 02Your previous results and the direction of change
  • 03Medicines that alter specific parameters
  • 04Whether the sample conditions were right, including fasting and timing

When to seek advice sooner

If you feel unwell, or if a result is flagged as critical, contact the doctor who ordered the test promptly. For a medical emergency, contact local emergency services.
